Ricardo Alex Aimer T. Reyes, an 8-year-old grade 3 pupil from the St. Francis De Assisi Montessori School in Plaridel, Bulacan, placed 3rd runner-up at the 2018 ALOHA Mental Arithmetic International Competition, which was held at the World Trade Center in Moscow, Russia on 22 July 2018.
ALOHA or Abacus Learning Of Higher Arithmetic was founded by Mr. Loh Mun Sung in 1993. It is an interactive brain development program that teaches children aged 5-13 mental calculation using only the abacus. Every year ALOHA organizes an international competition to test the skills of its students from its 4,000 centers around the world.
Around 600 students from Bangladesh, China, Croatia, Ecuador, India, Ireland, Malaysia Mexico, Nepal, Panama, Philippines, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and Uzbekistan competed in this year’s tilt. Participants had to solve 70 arithmetic items for five minutes.
"In congratulating Ricardo Reyes for his achievement in this competition, I would also like to thank him and his family for showcasing our country and its youth," said Ambassador Carlos D. Sorreta, Philippine Ambassador to the Russian Federation.
The event was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and Science, and the Federal Agency for Tourism (Rosturizm) of the Russian Federation.
Since its founding 25 years ago, ALOHA has already produced four (4) million graduates from 39 countries. ALOHA Philippines was represented by its President and CEO, Ms. Ivy Sato.
